The 把字句 (bǎ construction) moves the object before the verb to emphasize how it is affected, handled, or disposed of.
Structure: Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + Complement
I finished the homework.
When to use 把:
Object is specific (not general)
Action affects/changes the object
There is a result (complement, 了, direction, etc.)
Cannot use 把:
• With general objects: ✗ 把書看 → ✓ 看書
• Without result: ✗ 我把飯吃 → ✓ 我把飯吃了/吃完
• With stative verbs: ✗ 把他愛
Common patterns:
• 把...放在... (put...at...)
• 把...給... (give...to...)
• 把...做完 (finish doing...)
• 把...弄壞 (break/damage...)
把 moves object before verb
- 把書放在桌子上 (Put the book on the table)
Requires completed/affected action
- ❌ 把書看 (incomplete)
- ✅ 把書看完 (complete)
Not all verbs work with 把
