Completed action or change of state
HSK 1了 is one of the most fundamental particles in Chinese with two main functions:
Completed action (after verb) - Indicates the action is done
Change of state (sentence-final) - Something has changed or is now different
I ate (the meal).
It's raining now (it wasn't before).
Double 了 (verb + 了 + sentence-final 了) emphasizes both completion AND current relevance.
Position changes meaning
- 我吃了飯 = I ate (completed)
- 我吃飯了 = I'm eating now / I've started eating (change)
Don't use 了 for habitual actions
- ❌ 我每天吃了早飯
- ✅ 我每天吃早飯
Negation uses 沒(有), not 不
- ❌ 我不吃了飯
- ✅ 我沒吃飯
He left.
I understand now!
