〜たとたん means "the moment" or "just as" — something happens immediately (and often unexpectedly) right after an action.
Immediate sequence - B happens right after A completes
Often unexpected - The result is frequently surprising or unplanned
The moment I opened the door, the cat ran away.
Similar to 〜たら but emphasizes immediacy and often surprise.
Always uses た-form before とたん
- ✅ 食べたとたん
- ❌ 食べるとたん
Often implies surprise — the second event was unexpected
Can be written 途端 (kanji)
The moment I stood up, I felt dizzy.
Just as I hung up, it rang again.
