〜ておく expresses doing something in advance for future benefit, or leaving something in a certain state.
Formation: Verb て-form + おく
I booked the hotel before the trip (in preparation).
Two main uses:
Preparation - 買っておく (buy in advance)
Leaving as is - 開けておく (leave open)
Casual contraction:
ておく → とく
• 買っておく → 買っとく
• 見ておいて → 見といて
Common patterns:
• 〜ておいた方がいい - Should do (in advance)
• 〜ておいてください - Please do (in preparation)
• そのままにしておく - Leave as is
Nuance:
ておく implies forethought—doing something now because it will be useful or necessary later.
ておく = prepare in advance
- 予約しておく (make reservation in advance)
Casual: とく
- 買っておく → 買っとく
Different from てある (result state)
I will buy the ticket in advance.
Please leave the window open.
You should make a reservation ahead of time.
I prepared a bento for tomorrow.
