〜つもり expresses intention or plan - what you mean to do.
Future intention - 行くつもりです (I intend to go)
Negative intention - 行かないつもり (I don't intend to go)
Past intention - 行くつもりだった (I had intended to go)
I plan to go to Japan next year.
Also used for self-perception: ちゃんと説明したつもり (I believe I explained properly).
First person only — don't use for others' intentions
- ✅ 私は行くつもりです
- ❌ 彼は行くつもりです (use 予定 or そうです)
Dictionary form + つもり for positive intent
- ✅ 食べるつもり
- ❌ 食べたつもり (means "thought I ate")
つもり vs 予定 — つもり is personal intent, 予定 is scheduled plan
