Preparation - Do in advance for future benefit
Completion and leaving - Action done, result remains
Intentional state - Deliberately left that way

Very similar to -아/어 두다. 놓다 emphasizes completion; 두다 emphasizes keeping.
놓다 contracts to 놨다 in speech
