보다 means "than" in comparisons. Attach it to what you're comparing against.
Basic comparison — A가 B보다 + adjective (A is more X than B)
With 더 — Emphasizes "more than"
With 덜 — "Less than"
Word order: [Compared thing]보다 [Standard] + adjective, or [Standard]이/가 [Compared thing]보다 + adjective.

보다 attaches to the lesser item
- 여름**보다** 겨울이 좋아요 = Winter > Summer
- (Winter is better than summer)
더 is optional but common
- 커피가 차**보다** 좋아요 (I like coffee more than tea)
- 커피가 차**보다** **더** 좋아요 (same, emphasized)
Don't confuse with 보다 (to see)
- 영화**보다** 책이 좋아요 (I like books more than movies) — particle
- 영화**를 보다** (to watch a movie) — verb
Today is colder than yesterday.
It was faster than expected.
I'm taller than my older brother.
