Casual conjecture based on observation
Polite way to express assumption
Both 나 보다 and 것 같다 express guesses or assumptions, but they have different nuances.
나 보다 indicates a guess based on evidence you've observed. You're inferring from what you see, hear, or notice:
It looks like there are a lot of people outside.
것 같다 is more general - it can express guesses, opinions, or uncertainty with or without direct evidence:
I think it will rain tomorrow.
Key differences:
• 나 보다 - You observed something that led to your conclusion
• 것 같다 - General opinion, softer statement, or politeness hedge
것 같다 is also commonly used to soften statements and sound less direct, even when you're fairly certain. This makes it extremely common in everyday Korean.
나 보다 is too casual for formal situations — use 것 같다 with bosses/strangers
것 같다 can sound distant with close friends — 나 보다 is more natural in casual speech
Different formations
- 나 보다: Verb stem + 나/ㄴ가 보다
- 것 같다: Verb + 는/ㄴ/을 것 같다
I guess it's raining.
It seems like it's raining.
I guess that person is busy.
This problem seems difficult.
