Mid-sentence, adds additional reasoning
End of sentence with 吧, postpones discussion
Literally meaning to discuss again later
再说 has two distinct meanings depending on its position in the sentence.
1. "Besides" / "Moreover" - Adding another reason (mid-sentence):
I don't want to go. Besides, the weather isn't good either.
When used this way, 再说 introduces an additional point that supports your argument. It often comes after a comma or period.
2. "Let's talk about it later" - Postponing (end of sentence with 吧):
Let's talk about this later.
再说吧 is a polite way to defer a decision or avoid committing to something. It's commonly used when you don't want to directly refuse.
Quick guide:
• 再说 + clause = "besides/moreover"
• 再说吧 = "let's discuss later" / "we'll see"
再说 (besides) goes mid-sentence
- ✅ 我不去,再说太远了
- ❌ 再说我不去,太远了
Use 吧 for postponement
- 再说吧 (natural)
- 再说 alone (less natural for postponement)
再说 vs 而且 — 再说 is casual with personal reasons; 而且 is more formal
I don't want to go, and besides, I don't have time either.
This matter is too complicated; let's talk about it later.
This phone is too expensive, and besides, I don't need those features.
We'll talk about this topic again tomorrow.
