〜まま expresses maintaining a state while doing something else, meaning "as is," "while still," or "leaving something unchanged."
Formation:
• Verb た-form + まま (靴を履いたまま)
• Noun + の + まま (そのまま)
• い-adjective + まま (若いまま)
I fell asleep with the TV still on.
The key nuance is that a prior state continues without change. Often implies something was left undone or unchanged when it perhaps should have been addressed.
まま = unchanged state
- 窓を開けたまま寝た (slept with window open)
Can be positive or negative
- 座ったまま (remaining seated)
- 何も言わないまま (without saying anything)
Noun + のまま
I entered with my shoes still on.
I slept with the lights on.
I went out leaving the window open.
