-다고 하다 is indirect quotation - reporting what someone said. Different endings for statements, questions, commands, and suggestions.
Statements - -ㄴ/는다고 (verbs), -다고 (adjectives)
Questions - -(느)냐고
Commands - -(으)라고
Suggestions - -자고
They said they would come tomorrow.
Often contracted: -다고 해요 → -대요, -냐고 해요 → -냬요.
Statement forms by word type
- Action verb: -ㄴ/는다고 (간다고, 먹는다고)
- Descriptive verb: -다고 (예쁘다고, 크다고)
- Noun + 이다: -(이)라고 (학생이라고)
- Past: -았/었다고 (갔다고)
Common contractions
- -다고 해요 → -대요
- -냐고 해요 → -냬요
- -라고 해요 → -래요
- -자고 해요 → -재요
하다 can be replaced - 말하다, 묻다, 대답하다, etc.
